The son of a big liquor businessman of Barhalganj area of Gorakhpur got married last year. When the order for a new lottery for liquor shops came, he got the status certificate made in the name of his daughter-in-law and applied for it. Similarly, an 80-year-old man of Daudpur area has also become an applicant for a liquor shop to fulfill the wish of his sons. Now everyone’s eyes are fixed on the lottery to be released on March 6.
The conditions for allotment of liquor shops in the state have put the big liquor businessmen in trouble. According to the new condition, a person can get a maximum of two shops in the entire state. They found a way around this and applied for liquor shop licenses in the name of their elderly parents, brothers, wives, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, trusted relatives as well as friends. A businessman from PPganj had six shops including beer and desi liquor.
This time, in the desire of having more shops, a businessman has applied for five shops by getting a status certificate of Rs. 95 lakhs made in the name of his 72-year-old mother. A representative of an organization doing politics of employees in the education department has also applied for a liquor shop by getting a status certificate made in the name of his new daughter-in-law. The licensee of many major liquor shops of the city has also applied in the name of all the family members along with the daughter-in-law.
More than 15 thousand applications for 580 shops
A total of 15342 people have applied for a total of 580 shops of composite, desi, model shop and bhang in Gorakhpur district. According to departmental sources, more than 40 percent of the applicants are women and more than 25 percent are elderly. It is being argued that many people have property tax in the name of their wives. At the same time, elderly people also have good status. In the month of February, more than 5000 people have got status certificates ranging from 5 lakh to 10 crores for liquor shops.

District Excise Officer Mahendra Pratap Singh said that a person can apply as many times as per his status, but as soon as maximum two shops are allotted in his name in the entire state, he will be out of the lottery process. The lottery is to be held on March 6. Documents are being checked online.
