The wait for India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will end in just a few hours. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off this train on January 17th. He will also launch seven Amrit Bharat Express trains. He will inaugurate, lay the foundation stone, and dedicate several key development projects related to rail, road, and water transport. On January 17th, at approximately 12:45 p.m., the Prime Minister will arrive in Malda and flag off the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train from Malda Town Railway Station. This train will run between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya). He will also virtually flag off the Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Train.
Travel time will be reduced by approximately two and a half hours.
The fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat Sleeper train will offer passengers an aircraft-like experience at affordable fares. This train will reduce travel time on the Howrah-Guwahati route by approximately 2.5 hours, providing a major boost to long-distance travel, religious tourism, and the tourism sector. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for four major railway projects in West Bengal, including the Balurghat-Hili new rail line, a modern freight maintenance facility in New Jalpaiguri, the upgradation of the Siliguri loco shed, and the modernization of the maintenance infrastructure for Vande Bharat trains in Jalpaiguri district. This will strengthen passenger and freight services and create new employment opportunities.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation the electrification of the New Cooch Behar–Bamanhat and New Cooch Behar–Boxirhat rail lines, enabling faster, cleaner, and energy-efficient rail operations.
Seven new Amrit Bharat Express trains will also be launched:
New Jalpaiguri–Nagercoil Amrit Bharat Express
New Jalpaiguri–Tiruchirappalli Amrit Bharat Express
Alipurduar–SMVT Bengaluru Amrit Bharat Express
Alipurduar–Mumbai (Panvel) Amrit Bharat Express
Kolkata (Howrah)–Anand Vihar Terminal
Kolkata (Sealdah)–Varanasi
Kolkata (Santragachi)–Tambaram
All these projects will bolster the construction of modern infrastructure in Eastern and Northeastern India, enabling the region to emerge as a major engine of growth for the country. These trains will strengthen affordable and reliable long-distance rail connectivity for ordinary travelers, students, migrant workers, and businessmen. Along with this, two new trains equipped with LHB coaches – Radhikapur-SMVT Bengaluru Express and Balurghat-SMVT Bengaluru Express, will also be flagged off, providing direct connectivity to youth, students and IT professionals to major employment hubs like Bengaluru.
