RBI Bank Holiday List: Banks will be closed next week in various states across the country due to the festival of Bakrid. Additionally, SBI employees have announced a two-day nationwide strike, which could impact bank operations for several days during the week.
Bank Holiday Alert: If you have an account with the State Bank of India (SBI) or have a major bank-related transaction next week, this news is extremely important for you. Banks will be closed in various states next week due to the festival of Bakrid (Eid al-Adha). Additionally, State Bank of India employees have announced a nationwide two-day strike.
If this strike goes as scheduled, banking operations could be completely disrupted for six consecutive days in some states, including weekend holidays. To avoid any inconvenience, immediately check the list of holidays and affected cities below.
When are the holidays for Bakrid next week?
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, Bakrid holidays will vary in different regions depending on the sighting of the moon and local traditions:
May 28 (Thursday): Banks will be closed on May 28 in most states and major cities across the country for the main festival of Bakrid.
May 27 and 28 (Two-day closure): Banks will be closed for two consecutive days (Wednesday and Thursday) in Jammu and Kashmir and the Srinagar division.
City-Wise List: Know which days banks are closed in your city
According to the RBI calendar, banks will be closed in these major cities during the last week of May (May 26 to 28):
Cities closed on May 26 (Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti): Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Kochi, Kohila, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada.
Cities closed on May 27 (the first day of Bakrid): Jammu and Srinagar.
Cities closed on May 28 (Bakrid holiday): New Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bhopal, Patna, Ranchi, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Nagpur, Panaji, Raipur, Shimla, Shillong, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada.
SBI customers are facing a double blow, with a strike scheduled for May 25th and 26th.
In addition to the Bakrid holidays, the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation has called for a nationwide strike on May 25th (Monday) and May 26th (Tuesday).
Why is the strike happening?
Employee unions are protesting against delays in new recruitments, outsourcing of banking functions, the selection of National Pension System (NPS) fund managers, the career progression policy, and internal HRMS issues. If this strike occurs, operations at SBI branches could come to a complete halt, although operations at other banks (such as HDFC, PNB, ICICI) will remain normal.
Understand the math of the 6-day general strike:
A significant coincidence is occurring in some states, with banks remaining closed from Saturday to Thursday:
May 23rd: Fourth Saturday (banks closed).
May 24th: Weekly Sunday (banks closed).
May 25: Proposed strike by SBI employees (SBI affected).
May 26: Second day of strike + regional holiday in many cities (Kazi Nazrul Islam’s birth anniversary).
May 27: Bakrid holiday in Jammu and Kashmir.
May 28: Major Bakrid holiday in almost all states across the country.
Note: This strike is currently ‘proposed’. If negotiations with the government or bank management are successful, SBI branches may operate normally on May 25 and 26. So, be sure to confirm the situation with your local branch before leaving home.
Use digital services; work will remain uninterrupted.
Despite bank branches being closed, customers need not panic. All digital and online platforms will remain operational as usual to meet your financial needs:
UPI and Net Banking: Google Pay, PhonePe, and Net Banking will remain active 24 hours a day for money transfers or online payments.
ATMs and Cash Machines: ATM services will remain open for cash withdrawals and deposits.
IMPS/NEFT: Online fund transfers will not be affected by the holidays.
