Plastic Currency: ₹10 and ₹20 Polymer Banknotes Trial: The Central Government informed the Parliament on 27 July 2026 that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) proposal for field trial of polymer bank notes of ₹10 and ₹20 denomination has been approved. The Finance Ministry, in response to a question asked in Parliament, said that the RBI’s objective is to test the usefulness and lifespan of polymer notes which are more durable than paper notes.
100-100 crore pieces of polymer notes will be tested
According to the Finance Ministry, the RBI, following the recommendation of its Central Board, had proposed to conduct a trial by issuing 1 billion pieces each of polymer notes of ₹10 and ₹20. If this field trial is successful, then regular issuance of polymer bank notes in both these denominations will start. The central bank has clarified that the introduction of polymer notes is still in the initial stage.
Why was there need for polymer notes?
Polymer notes have many advantages over paper notes. According to international studies, notes made of polymer i.e. plastic last much longer than paper notes. These notes do not get damaged by water, do not tear easily and do not get soiled easily due to sweat or dirt. Small notes like ₹10 and ₹20 are used a lot, so paper notes get spoiled quickly.
Will old paper notes be discontinued?
The government has clarified the entire situation on this matter. RBI will bring these new polymer notes into circulation along with the existing paper notes. There is currently no proposal to completely phase out paper currency or replace it with polymer notes.
What will be the impact on digital payments?
When asked whether the introduction of plastic notes will impact UPI and digital payments, the Finance Ministry said, whether it will have any impact or not can be properly assessed only after the regular issuance of polymer notes. The Government believes that paper/polymer bank notes and digital payment systems are complementary to each other and both options will remain available for the convenience of the public.
