Passenger Reservation System: In a written reply to a question on PRS upgradation, Vaishnav said that capacity enhancement and technology upgradation is a continuous process of Indian Railways. The Railway Minister said that the new system has been designed for more than four times the existing capacity.
Passenger Reservation System: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that the Indian Railways is making massive changes to its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which currently has the capacity to book 25,000 tickets per minute. In a written reply to a question on PRS upgrade, Vaishnaw said that capacity enhancement and technology upgradation is an ongoing process of Indian Railways. At present, the booking capacity of the existing PRS is about 25,000 tickets per minute.
The comprehensive upgrade includes replacement and enhancement of hardware, software, network equipment, security infrastructure and functionality, all of which are based on new technology and capable of supporting additional features.
Improvement in mobile ticketing
Vaishnaw said that the new system has been designed for more than four times the existing capacity. He informed that the project has been approved at a cost of Rs 182 crore. He also highlighted the improvement in mobile ticketing. Railways recently launched RailOne app, which allows passengers to book both reserved and unreserved tickets directly from their smartphones.
Advance booking time limit
Train ticket bookings always see a huge surge during the festive season in India. This is the time when many migrants return home and families come together to celebrate festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath. Last year, the Railway Ministry had reduced the advance booking time limit for train tickets from 120 days to 60 days. But as the festive season is approaching and the demand for train ticket booking is increasing, it is becoming difficult for passengers to book train tickets.
From 1 November 2024, Indian Railways has reduced the advance ticket booking period from 120 days to 60 days (excluding the day of journey). At intermediate stations arriving on the next day, reservations can be made 61 days in advance.
