Jewar Airport: On Friday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an aerodrome license to the Noida International Airport in Jewar. This step is considered important towards the resumption of flight operations. This information was given to PTI by Rakesh Kumar Singh, CEO of International Airport Limited (NIAL) and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority.
NIAL nodal officer Shailendra Bhatia said that the aerodrome license has been issued as per the Civil Aviation Rules for domestic flights and cargo operations.
Bhatia said that operations and arrangements at the airport are expected to be completed within the next 45 days and the airport infrastructure is now fully ready.
NIA CEO’s statement
Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Noida International Airport (NIA), said in a statement, “Receiving the airport license is an important milestone in our journey. It reflects the strong collaboration with our partners and the hard work we have put in preparing for commercial operations. We are committed to building a modern, convenient, and passenger-centric airport that will serve as a catalyst for regional economic growth.”
Officials said the airport will be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the future.
This greenfield airport, being developed on a PPP model in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar, will become one of the largest airports in the country when fully operational.
Capable of handling 12 million passengers
He explained that the first phase of the project, spanning 1,300 hectares and consisting of a runway and a terminal building, will be able to handle 12 million passengers annually. The airport was initially planned to open to passengers in September 2024.
The airport said in a statement that the aerodrome licence, granted under Rule 78 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, certifies that the airport complies with all the necessary regulations, including operational regulations, security arrangements, infrastructure, navigation aids, and emergency preparedness, as required by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Civil Aviation Rules.
The statement said, “This follows the recent approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which provided the final security checks for domestic passenger operations, as well as domestic and international cargo operations. These approvals together mark a major step in the airport’s preparations for resumption of operations.”
The statement also said that the airport’s Airport Security Program (ASP) is currently being reviewed and audited by BCAS.
It further stated that preparations are underway under the airport’s Operational Readiness Activation and Transition (ORAT) program to ensure that systems, processes, and staff are fully prepared for a safe and smooth resumption of operations.
Flight operations to commence within 45 days
Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Jewar, Dhirendra Singh, stated that site clearance for the development of the airport in Jewar was obtained on July 6, 2017, and after nearly nine years of continuous planning, the project has now reached its final stages.
Dhirendra Singh said, “With the receipt of the aerodrome license, Noida International Airport is expected to be fully ready for flight operations within the next 45 days. The airport will be formally inaugurated after the Prime Minister’s program is finalized.”
He said that this airport is not just an infrastructure project, but will prove to be a major economic engine for western Uttar Pradesh, creating new opportunities for industry, trade, tourism, employment, and investment.
The airport will put Jewar on the map.
The BJP leader, who played a key role in land acquisition, said the airport will place Jewar prominently on the global economic map.
According to an airport statement, “All major infrastructure required for operations has now been completed, and necessary concessions have been granted in mobility services, ground handling, in-flight catering, aviation fuel, cargo, retail, food and beverage, and airport hotels. The Airports Authority of India has commissioned the communication and navigation systems.”
The airport said the aerodrome license confirms that the airside infrastructure, flight operation regulations, and security arrangements at Noida International Airport (NIA) are all ready and in accordance with the standards. However, the resumption of commercial flights will be determined after the Aerodrome Security Program (ASP) is approved by the BCAS.
The airport licence confirms that the airside infrastructure, flight operation regulations and security arrangements at Noida International Airport (NIA) are all as per the standards, but the resumption of commercial flights will be decided only after the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) is approved by BCAS.
