Vande Bharat is now not just the identity of the new and better Railways, but is also becoming a major source of income for the Railways. Railways plans to run more than 800 Vande Bharat trainsets by 2030.
The number of passengers traveling in Vande Bharat trains is continuously increasing. In the financial year 2025-26, about 3.98 crore passengers traveled by Vande Bharat. This number was 2.97 crore in 2024-25. That means the number of passengers has increased by about 34% in one year. In the year 2019, the first Vande Bharat started between New Delhi and Varanasi. Since then, more than 9.1 crore passengers have traveled in these trains.
Seats full on many routes
The demand for seats in many trains of Vande Bharat is very high. The number of passengers has been very high on routes like Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, New Delhi, Varanasi and Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam. Occupancy was recorded more than 100% on some routes. This happens because of bookings from intermediate stations.
Railways’ earnings from Vande Bharat have also increased. According to Southern Railway data, passenger earnings from Vande Bharat trains in that region were Rs 540.65 crore in the financial year 2024-25. This increased to more than Rs 803 crore in the financial year 2025-26.
Sleeper Vande Bharat launched
Now Vande Bharat will not be used only for day travel. There are preparations to provide premium service even in night journeys through Vande Bharat sleeper trains. More than 1.21 lakh passengers traveled in the initial sleeper service and the trains ran at full capacity.
Railways aims to produce more than 800 Vande Bharat train sets by 2030. With this, there will be more network of fast and comfortable rail travel in the country. Railways hopes that passengers paying more fare than this may prefer to travel by train instead of airlines and road.
