According to the calendar of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks are going to be closed in most of the states today on Friday. Will banks be open in these states on Janmashtami?
Janmashtami will be celebrated nationwide today. Many states will see banks closed in observance of this festival. The states where banks will not operate include Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Rajasthan, Jammu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Kolkata, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh. All public and private sector banks, such as State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Bandhan Bank, will be closed.
Banks will be closed for Krishna Janmashtami
Janmashtami marks the celebration of Lord Shri Krishna’s birthday. This festival occurs on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada. Devotees observe a fast throughout the day and engage in worship of Lord Krishna. Homes and temples are beautifully decorated. At midnight, coinciding with Krishna’s birth, puja, aarti, and bhajan-kirtan take place. The chants of “Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki” fill the temples during this time. Additionally, tableaus depicting Lord Krishna’s childhood are set up on Janmashtami, and offerings of Makhan-Mishri and Panjiri are made. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, the Dahi-Handi festival is also celebrated, where groups of young people form human pyramids to break pots hung at a height.

Banks will be operational in several states during Janmashtami. These states include Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Goa.
When will banks be closed in September?
September 4 – Many cities will see banks closed due to Janmashtami (Vaishnav) and Krishna Jayanti.
September 6 – Sunday
September 11 – Banks will be closed in Jaipur due to Municipal Corporation elections.
September 12 – Bank branches in Guwahati will be closed for the Tirubhav tithi of Srimanta Sankardev.
September 13 – Sunday
September 14 – Banks will remain closed in many cities including Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji and Vijayawada due to Ganesh Chaturthi i.e. Ganesh Puja.
September 15 – Samvatsari, Nuakhai, second day of Ganesh Chaturthi will be observed due to which banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Goa.
September 20 – Sunday
September 21 – Banks will remain closed in Bhubaneswar and Thiruvananthapuram due to Srimanta Sankardev Janmotsav and Sri Narayana Guru Samadhi.
September 22 – Banks will remain closed in Ranchi due to Karma Puja.
September 23 – Banks will remain closed in Jammu and Srinagar on account of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji’s birthday.
September 25 – Banks in Gangtok will remain closed due to Indrajatra.
September 26 – Banks will remain closed due to fourth Saturday.
September 27 – Sunday.
