EPFO: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has introduced a significant update to the features on its Unified Member Portal. After a system upgrade in June, the option to activate a Universal Account Number (UAN) has been removed from the EPFO portal.
Now, members are required to use the government app, the Umang app, to activate their UAN. Thankfully, the Umang app makes it simple to activate your UAN using Aadhaar-based face authentication (FAT).
However, key features such as generating UAN, checking application status, and filing death claims remain functional on the EPFO portal as they were before.
What is the UMANG app and what services does it offer now?
UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. This government app enables you to access a range of PF-related services directly from your smartphone without needing to log into the EPFO portal. You can now find these six important features on the UMANG app.
1. UAN allotment and activation
2. UAN Activation (Single Service)
3. Face authentication for already activated UAN
4. Answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding PF
5. Account details information via SMS
6. Access account details through missed call
These vital services are still accessible on the EPFO portal.
Tracking Application Status: You can conveniently monitor the current status of your pension application for higher wages on the portal.
UAN allotment for existing PF accounts: If you possess a PF account but have not yet received a UAN, you can verify your mobile number on the portal. Following this, you can generate a new UAN by providing the necessary details and link it to your current PF account.
UAN Retrieval: If you’ve misplaced your UAN, you can recover it in just two steps. Simply enter your registered mobile number, upload your identity/address proof, and input the OTP to quickly retrieve your UAN.
Filing a Death Claim: Nominees (heirs) can still submit death claims, including pension claims, through the EPF portal. The beneficiary must have an active mobile number linked to Aadhaar and have their bank account details ready.
Documents required for EPF death claim
Death certificate of the deceased member
Proof of beneficiary’s bank account (cancelled cheque or copy of passbook)
Proof of date of birth of the beneficiary (DOB Proof)
All files must be in PDF format only.
The size of any file should not exceed 2 MB.
There should not be any space between the file name.
In the last week of June, the EPFO portal and Umang app were temporarily down due to a major system migration. This major upgrade was aimed at providing faster, more secure, and seamless service to PF account holders.
