EPFO Update – How to Generate and Activate UAN from Home? Check Easy Steps

EPFO New Facility: If you are a PF account holder or have recently joined the workforce and the Provident Fund system, this news could be very useful for you. The EPFO has simplified the process of generating and activating a UAN (Universal Account Number). Extensive paperwork is no longer required; employees can now generate a new UAN or activate an existing one from home using the UMANG app and Aadhaar-based face authentication.

Once the UAN is activated, users can access various EPFO online services, such as checking EPF balances, downloading statements, and filing claims. Face authentication reduces the reliance on physical and manual verification processes.

Which employees will benefit?

This facility is particularly beneficial for employees joining the EPF system for the first time who need a new UAN. Additionally, those who already possess a UAN but have not yet activated it can do so via the UMANG app. To generate a new UAN, a valid Aadhaar number, a mobile number linked to Aadhaar, and the ‘Aadhaar Face RD’ application are required.

How to generate a new UAN via UMANG?

To generate a new UAN, select the ‘UAN Allotment and Activation’ option within the UMANG app. Next, enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number, and provide your consent. You will need to verify the OTP sent to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. The system will then check whether a UAN is already linked to that Aadhaar number. If no existing UAN is found, the ‘Face RD’ feature will be used for face authentication. Once the face scan is complete, the system will send the UAN to the registered mobile number.

How to activate an existing UAN?

If an employee already has a UAN that is not yet active, they can use the ‘UAN Activation’ option in the UMANG app. To do this, simply enter the UAN, Aadhaar number, and mobile number. Next, you must grant permission for verification and complete the OTP process. The OTP verification is conducted via Aadhaar. Once UIDAI successfully authenticates the details, it activates the UAN. Afterwards, the member receives the UAN and a temporary password via text message.

Updating Records via Face Authentication

Upon successful verification, the verified photo and address can be updated in the EPFO records. This reduces the need for repeated authentication processes. Face authentication is also available for members with an active UAN. After providing consent, UIDAI will verify the details, and the verified information will be updated in the EPFO records.

What to do if OTP or Face Scan Fails?

Issues may arise during the UAN creation or activation process due to incorrect mobile numbers or Aadhaar numbers, OTP failures, or incomplete face authentication. In such cases, re-check the entered details and repeat the OTP or face authentication process. If the problem persists, you may need to contact EPFO’s support services.

What to do After UAN Activation?

Once the UAN is activated, members can access a wide range of EPFO digital services. These include checking the EPF balance, claiming EPF advances, downloading the EPF passbook, tracking claim status, updating KYC details, and utilising other online services linked to the UAN.
