SBI ATM Rules: If you’re a customer of the largest public sector bank in the country, State Bank of India (SBI), then this information is for you. The bank has modified the rules regarding debit card transactions at ATMs for customers with salary accounts. These new rules will come into effect on October 1, 2026. Let’s explore the changes.
What changes have been made?
SBI has adjusted the limit for free monthly transactions using SBI debit cards at ATMs or Automated Deposit cum Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) of other banks. According to the updated rules, the number of free transactions will decrease from 10 to 5 per month across all centers. This includes both financial and non-financial transactions. Currently, customers with salary package accounts enjoy 10 free transactions per month at ATMs/ADWMs of other banks, which cover financial services like cash withdrawals and non-financial services such as balance inquiries and mini statements. However, the rules for cardless cash withdrawals remain unchanged.
Additionally, SBI has not altered the fees for transactions that exceed the limit. As before, cash withdrawals from other banks’ ATMs after the free limit is reached will incur a fee of Rs 23 + GST per transaction, while non-financial transactions will cost Rs 11 + GST.
What did the bank state?
SBI mentioned in a statement, “There will be no change in the number of free transactions per month and the applicable service charges for accounts other than salary package accounts.” This indicates that this change is solely applicable to holders of salary accounts.
What else is changing for SBI customers from October 2026?
SBI has also announced revised service charges for Basic Deposit Account (BSBD) customers. SBI Basic Savings Deposit Account customers who use the bank’s cash withdrawal facility will be eligible for four free withdrawals per month from the date of implementation. However, cash withdrawal transactions after the first four free withdrawals in a month will be charged ₹15 + GST (per transaction). Cash withdrawals will include withdrawal transactions made through branches, ATMs, micro-ATMs, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS), and CASH@POS. However, digital fund transfers made by customers through UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, and POS will remain free as before.
