Amidst this, the Income Tax Department has released a piece of information that is bound to leave you astonished.
Did you know that Mahendra Singh Dhoni ranks at the very top when it comes to paying income tax? This information is derived from the latest data released by the Income Tax Department. During the years 2025 and 2026, the Income Tax Department collected a total of ₹20,000 crore in taxes across the states of Jharkhand and Bihar. When combining the figures for both states, the name of former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has emerged as the highest individual taxpayer.
Find out what the official had to say:
According to the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, DDrD. Sudhakar Rao, the total tax collection in Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial years 2025 and 2026 amounted to approximately ₹20,000 crore. Of this total, ₹12,000 crore was collected solely within the state of Jharkhand.
During his briefing, he revealed that approximately 70 per cent of the total collection was realised through Tax Deducted at Source (TDS). Rao stated that, for the previous financial year, Dhoni emerged as the highest individual taxpayer across the combined region of Bihar and Jharkhand. However, he was unable to disclose the specific details of Dhoni’s net tax return.
How many taxpayers are there in Bihar and Jharkhand?
Rao informed that mining operations were adversely affected last year due to heavy rainfall. This had a consequential impact on tax collections. Consequently, he expressed optimism that tax collections for the current financial year would surpass the ₹20,000 crore mark. He further added that there are approximately 5.5 crore PAN card holders across Bihar and Jharkhand; however, the number of individuals who actually file their final tax returns stands at only 40 lakhs.
Dhoni misses out on IPL matches
Mahendra Singh Dhoni—a figure who has consistently won the hearts of fans—has been unable to play a single match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season. The five-time champion, now 44 years old, remains sidelined due to a calf injury. At the start of the league, the Super Kings stated that he would be sidelined for two weeks; however, with more than five weeks having elapsed in the IPL and him remaining out of the squad, speculation regarding his future has intensified.
