Why are banks closed today, Friday, August 28th?
In numerous states, banks will be shut on Friday, August 28th, due to Raksha Bandhan, Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti, Ayyankali Jayanti, and Pang-Lhabsol. Most public and private sector banks, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Bandhan Bank, will be closed.
The following states will see bank closures on August 28 due to Raksha Bandhan: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, banks in Kerala and Sikkim will also be closed for local celebrations like Pang-Lhabsol, Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti, and Ayyankali Jayanti.

Pang-Lhabsol is a significant Buddhist festival in Sikkim, particularly linked to the veneration of Mount Kanchenjunga.

Today, Friday, August 28, banks will remain open in Agartala, Aizawl, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, Goa, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya and Andhra Pradesh.
Why was Rakshabandhan holiday not given?
There are three types of bank holidays in India. National holidays like Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Bank branches remain closed across the country on these days.
