This announcement was made by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Sunday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Uzbekistan. He said that this decision will increase contact between the people of the two countries and will give new impetus to tourism, business and mutual exchange. Prime Minister Modi is on a two-day state visit to Uzbekistan from 29 to 30 August. During the delegation-level talks between the two countries in Tashkent, President Mirziyoyev described India as a reliable strategic partner of Uzbekistan.
14 Direct Flights Between the Two Countries Every Week
According to President Mirziyoyev, relations between India and Uzbekistan are steadily strengthening. Bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded $1 billion last year for the first time. He also noted that the number of joint ventures between the two countries has increased nearly sevenfold in recent years. Fourteen direct flights operate between the two countries every week. The introduction of a 30-day visa-free facility could significantly facilitate travel to Uzbekistan for Indian travelers. This is expected to significantly increase tourism, business travel, and people-to-people contacts between the two countries.
India and Uzbekistan’s relations are not limited to trade; cultural ties between the two countries are also long-standing and strong. Institutions like the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Indian Culture and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Indian Studies in Tashkent are playing a key role in strengthening cultural ties between the two countries. Yoga is also gaining popularity in Uzbekistan. There has been a dedicated Yoga Federation since 2018 and a Yoga Mahotsav was also organised across the country in June this year.
India and Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations on March 18, 1992. India was among the first countries to recognize Uzbekistan’s sovereignty after its independence. The two countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2011.
Since then, cooperation between the two countries has steadily increased in political, economic, and cultural spheres. Prior to Prime Minister Modi’s current visit, several high-level meetings have taken place between the two countries. Modi previously visited Uzbekistan in 2015 and for the SCO Summits in 2016 and 2022. President Mirziyoyev also visited India on a state visit in 2018.
This new visa-free arrangement in Uzbekistan could make travel to Central Asia more attractive for Indians. This will be a major advantage, especially for those who want to see Uzbekistan’s historical sites, culture, and architecture. After visiting Tashkent, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, where he will participate in the 26th SCO Summit under the chairmanship of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.
This summit is being held to mark the 25th anniversary of the SCO. The 30-day visa-free facility for Indians is an important step in India-Uzbekistan relations, which is expected to benefit both tourism and business in the future.
