SBI New Rules – Free Cash Withdrawal Limit Reduced, Will Your ATM Withdrawals Become Costly

SBI New Rules: If you are an SBI account holder, this news is significant for you. The country’s largest public sector bank holds savings or salary accounts for many customers. If you have an SBI account, changes taking effect from October 1st may come as a shock. Under the new rules, SBI salary and savings account holders will have to pay higher fees for cash withdrawals—an expense that will come directly out of your pocket. The bank has already informed account holders about these changes.

Changed Rules for Cash Withdrawal

SBI has announced that new charges regarding cash withdrawals from ‘Basic Savings Bank Deposit’ accounts opened at bank branches will come into effect on October 1, 2026. Account holders will be allowed four free transactions per month. However, any transaction beyond this limit will incur a charge; essentially, you will have to pay for the fifth transaction. For such transactions—including ATM cash withdrawals—a fee of ₹15 plus GST will be charged. Customers will now need to keep track of their transaction count when withdrawing money from ATMs.

Charges on Salary Accounts Too

Currently, transactions and ATM cash withdrawals from salary accounts are free. However, SBI is preparing to revise the rules for salary accounts. According to the bank, it plans to halve the monthly free transaction limit. Starting October 1, 2026, the limit for debit card transactions—including those at other banks’ ATMs and Automated Deposit & Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs)—for SBI salary account holders will be capped at five transactions per month. Previously, ten transactions were permitted.

Charges on Non-Financial Transactions

SBI has reduced the ATM transaction limit for salary accounts. At the same time, SBI has provided a limit of five free transactions at other banks’ ATMs. This covers both financial and non-financial transactions. Banks have clarified that the scope extends beyond just cash withdrawals to include non-financial services such as checking account balances and obtaining mini-statements at ATMs.

It has also been stated that cash withdrawals exceeding the free limit—specifically, the sixth transaction in a month—will incur a charge of ₹23 plus GST. Meanwhile, non-financial transactions beyond the free limit will incur a fee of ₹11 plus GST.
